THE RFC MYC: Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC)-(NCAA Division III)

Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC)-(NCAA Division III)

Overview: After sitting out the entire 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) bounced back in a big way for the 2021 season, as four of its eight football teams not only posted winning records last fall, they also saw three of those squads won at least nine games by the end of the campaign.

The usual suspect that ended up on top of the heap in the WIAC was the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks. After winning yet another WIAC title at 7-0 in conference play, UWW made yet another deep postseason run, with the Warhawks advancing to the national semifinals of the NCAA Division III playoffs before losing to eventual national champion Mary Hardin-Baylor to finish their season at 13-1 overall.

As for the other three WIAC teams that had a winning season last fall, the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse Eagles were the only other team to advance to the D-III playoffs, crushing Albion in the first round before falling to finish their season at 9-3 overall. Also, the University of Wisconsin-River Falls Falcons enjoyed one of their best seasons in recent memory, as they finished the 2021 season at 9-2 overall, after knocking off Washington (Mo.), 48-27, to win the inaugural Isthmus Bowl on November 20. Finally, the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Titans finished a respectable fourth place in the WIAC at 4-3, and 6-3 overall, losing all three games by a combined 35 points.

Looking ahead to the 2022 season, the WIAC once again is expected to be one of the toughest conferences at the D-III level, with the four aforementioned teams; UWW at #4, UWL at #12, UWRF at #18, and UWO at #19, all ranked in the d3football.com preseason poll. Don't be surprised if any of these four teams find themselves winning the WIAC title this fall.
