Let's turn back the clock to 1984. That was when the Montana State Bobcats outlasted the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs by two scores to win their only NCAA Division I-AA (now the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision). By 1987, the Bulldogs moved up to NCAA Division I-A (now the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision), where they remain to this day.
With yet another bowl season just around the corner, let's turn the clock back to 1988. That was when the now-defunct Big West Conference (at least for NCAA Division I-A/FBS football) champion Fresno State Bulldogs squared off against the then Mid-American Conference champion Western Michigan Broncos in the long gone, yet not forgotten, California Bowl.
