THE RFC MYC: American Southwest Conference (ASC)-(NCAA Division III)

American Southwest Conference (ASC)-(NCAA Division III)

Overview: The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Crusaders made history in 2021, as they became the first-ever team to finish an entire calendar year undefeated after finishing the spring season at 5-0, then finished 15-0 in the traditional fall season. UMHB crushed then-defending national champion North Central 57-24 in the Stagg Bowl to win their second national championship in program history.

Going into 2022, the "Cru" will try to extend their 20-game winning streak, while also hoping to repeat as national champions, with UMHB beginning the season ranked at #1 in the d3football.com preseason poll. However, they must overcome a tough early-season stretch that includes the season opener at home vs. #11 Muhlenberg, a trip to #4 Wisconsin-Whitewater, and a visit to fellow American Southwest Conference (ASC) rival Hardin-Simmons (9-1 overall, 8-1 in the ASC in 2021). The Cowboys' lone loss last fall came to the Crusaders in a 34-28 setback on September 25.

Finally, in off-the-field news, the ASC became an all-Texas circuit earlier this year (2022) when the Belhaven University Blazers from Jackson, Mississippi left the league to join the USA South Athletic Conference as an associate member for football. That move leaves the conference with nine football-playing institutions, all from the Lone Star State. Still, expect the "Cru" from UMHB to be the team to beat in the conference and the nation this season.
