Overview: After being upset in the spring 2021 NAIA playoffs by their longtime archrivals in the Northwestern College Red Raiders, the Morningside College Mustangs delivered the ultimate payback during the fall 2021 campaign, handing the former squad its only two losses of the season, finishing at 12-2 overall. The Mustangs defeated the Red Raiders 55-49 in the regular season meeting on November 6, then outlasted them 28-19 in the semifinal rematch on December 4. 

In the NAIA national championship game, Morningside won its third national championship in four years after defeating Grand View 38-28 on December 18. The Mustangs not only finished the 2021 fall season undefeated at 14-0 overall but they also have compiled a combined overall record of 53-1 dating back to the start of the 2018 season.

Going into the 2022 season, the expectations of both Morningside and Northwestern have never been higher, with the Mustangs and Red Raiders beginning the season ranked #1 and 3, respectively, in the NAIA preseason poll. Additionally, both aforementioned teams were picked to finish first and second, respectively, in the GPAC preseason poll. Both teams will be tested right away when they square off against each other on September 3.

If that wasn't enough, the Dordt University Defenders (7-3 overall in 2021) will play host to Morningside on September 10. Either way, don't be surprised if either Northwestern, Morningside, or even Dordt, find themselves making deep postseason runs yet again come December.
