THE RFC MYC: Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC)-(NCAA Division III)

Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC)-(NCAA Division III)

Overview:  After being forced to sit out the 2020 season due to COVID-19, the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) found its way back on the field in time for the 2021 season, with four of the league's seven squads finishing with a winning record last fall.

When the regular season finally ended on November 13, it was the AmCats of Anna Maria College that found themselves on top of the ECFC for the first time in program history. That accomplishment came about after the AmCats downed Maritime (N.Y.) 31-7 to finish conference play at 5-1. Anna Maria's season ended in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs after falling to Delaware Valley to finish at 7-3 overall.

As for the other three teams in the ECFC that finished their seasons with winning records, the Alfred State College Pioneers also advanced to postseason play in some form for the first time in their program's short history after overcoming an 0-3 start to their 2021 season. The Pioneers' season finished at 6-5 overall after losing to UMass-Dartmouth in the New England Bowl series on November 20. Like Anna Maria, Alfred State also finished 5-1 in ECFC action.

The Castleton University Spartans also held their own as far as contending for the ECFC crown was concerned, as they finished third in the conference at 4-2 and 6-4 overall, while the Gallaudet University Bison struggled down the stretch after a 5-0 start, to finish their season at 5-3 overall and 3-3 in the ECFC.

Moving on to the 2022 season, the ECFC is expected to keep the same seven squads that were on the field throughout the 2021 season. Don't be surprised if any of the four teams mentioned above advance to the D-III playoffs as this year's automatic qualifier.

ICYMI: UIW to stay in the Southland Conference (FCS)

Here's some brief, breaking news to report from the FCS. The University of Incarnate Word (UIW) announced on June 24, 2022, that they would stay in the Southland Conference, instead of moving to the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). That move was to have taken place on July 1, 2022.

UIW's decision to remain in the Southland Conference gives the SLC seven of its members, six of whom are FCS playoff-eligible. As for the WAC, UIW's departure leaves that league with only four playoff-eligible members in Abilene Christian, Lamar, Stephen F. Austin, and Southern Utah.

THE RFC MYC: Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC)-(NCAA Division III)

Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC)-(NCAA Division III)

Overview: Four of the seven teams in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) combined to win 30 games overall in 2021, with Endicott rolling past Western New England 45-21 on October 9 to claim their conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs. The Gulls' season ended in the first round after losing to RPI, 20-14, to finish their season at 8-3 overall, while the Golden Bears fell to Merchant Marine, 63-35, in the New England Bowl series, to finish at 7-4 overall. Both teams finished CCC play at 5-1 in conference games.

On the other hand, two other teams fell way short of advancing to postseason play, despite winning a combined 15 games between them, as the Salve Regina University Seahawks finished the season at 8-2 overall, while the Husson University Eagles settled for a 7-3 overall record last fall. Both of those squads finished in a two-way tie for third place at 4-2 in CCC action.

Looking ahead to 2022, don't be surprised if the four aforementioned listed above find themselves doing battle for the CCC crown this fall.

THE RFC MYC: Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA)-(NCAA Division II)

Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA)-(NCAA Division II)

Overview: The Bowie State University Bulldogs once again proved why they were one of the best teams at the NCAA Division II level, as they won their third straight Central Intercollegiate Athletics Association (CIAA) championship in 2021, defeating the Fayetteville State University Broncos by the final score of 17-7 on November 13. After opening their season with a tough 32-24 loss to FCS Delaware State on September 4, the Bulldogs reeled off 12 straight wins before losing to eventual national runner-up Valdosta State in the quarterfinal round of the D-II playoffs to finish at 12-2 overall.

With the focus now turning to the 2022 season, Bowie State will hope to win its fourth-straight CIAA crown, while Fayetteville State will look to steal the title away from the Bulldogs after falling in the title game for the third straight season. The Broncos will look to bounce back after finishing the 2021 season at 8-2 overall, as well as unbeaten in CIAA play at 7-0, which was good enough for them to win the Southern Division title.

THE RFC MYC: Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC)-(NCAA Division II)

Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC)-(NCAA Division II)

Overview: The University of Findlay Oilers knocked off their fellow Ohio archrivals in the Tiffin University Dragons in a dramatic 26-21 contest to clinch the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) championship on November 13. It was the program's first conference championship of any kind since 1997. In the NCAA Division II playoffs, the Oilers gave eventual national semifinalist Shepherd all it could handle before falling in the first round by a final score of 38-31. Findlay finished its fall 2021 season at 8-4 overall after falling to Shepherd.

As for Tiffin, the Dragons found themselves on the outside looking in for postseason play despite finishing their season at 8-3 overall, as well as at 5-2 in G-MAC play. Instead, it was the Hillsdale College Chargers from Michigan that advanced to the America's Crossroads Bowl. That was because Hillsdale pulled off the upset over Tiffin 24-21 on the road on October 2. In the Crossroads Bowl, the Chargers lost to Truman State 34-17 on December 4 to end their season at 6-6 overall.

Moving ahead to 2022 and beyond, expect another competitive conference championship race in the G-MAC this season, with the usual suspects in Findlay, Tiffin, and Hillsdale expected to be serious contenders this fall, while Ohio Dominican (7-4 overall, 4-3 in the G-MAC in 2021) and Ashland (5-5, 4-3) also hope to be in the conversation. Additionally, Thomas More University in Crestview Hills, Kentucky has successfully applied to join the D-II ranks starting in 2023. That will give the G-MAC nine football-playing schools assuming no more members enter or leave the league by then.

THE RFC MYC: Mountain East Conference (MEC)-(NCAA Division II)

Mountain East Conference (MEC)-(NCAA Division II)

Overview: The Notre Dame College (Ohio) Falcons used a run of 20 unanswered points in the second quarter to knock off the Frostburg State University Bobcats, 23-21, on October 9. That win turned out to be the main catalyst for NDC to claim the Mountain East Conference (MEC) championship for the fall 2021 season. After slipping their way past Slippery Rock in the first round, the Falcons fell to eventual national semifinalist Shepherd in the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs to finish their season at 11-2 overall.

If the preseason predictions provide any indication for the upcoming 2022 season, expect NDC to be in the conversation for both a national championship, as well as another Mountain East Conference championship this fall. The Falcons will enter the season ranked at No. 9 in the Lindy's Sports and Wayne Cavadi Power 10 polls.

However, don't expect NDC to just cruise to that conference crown, as Frostburg State looks to mount a serious challenge for the MEC championship after compiling a combined overall record of 13-2 during the 2021 calendar year, with the Bobcats finishing 3-1 during the shortened spring season, followed by a 10-1 mark at the end of the traditional fall season. Guess whom Frostburg State lost to during that 15-game span last year? None other than Notre Dame College. Don't count out Charleston (W. Va.)-(8-2 overall in 2021) in the conference championship conversation either.

THE RFC MYC: Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)-(NCAA Division II)

Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)-(NCAA Division II)

Overview: The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) proved once again why it's one of the toughest conferences at the NCAA Division II level, year in and year out, as seven of the league's 16 squads finished the 2021 season with a winning record. Of those seven teams, six squads won at least seven games, while five teams won at least nine or more games.

However, the one squad that made the most noise in the PSAC last fall wasn't from Pennsylvania, as the Shepherd University Rams from Shepherdstown, West Virginia made an incredible run in the D-II playoffs. The Rams outlasted Findlay and Notre Dame (Ohio) in the first two rounds before avenging their lone regular-season loss to Kutztown (11-2 overall in 2021) with a dramatic 30-28 upset win on the road, on the game's final play. Shepherd fell to eventual national champion Ferris State in the national semifinals to finish its season at 13-2 overall.

Looking ahead to 2022, the PSAC once again seeks to prove its worth as an elite conference in D-II, as Shepherd begins the season at No. 6 in the Lindy's Sports preseason poll. Expect competitive races in both the East and West Divisions this fall, with Shippensburg (9-2 overall in 2021) and West Chester (6-5) looking to challenge Kutztown and Shepherd, respectively, in the East, while Slippery Rock (9-3), California (Pa.)-(9-1), and Indiana (Pa.)-(7-3) hope to be the one team to finish on top in the West.

THE RFC MYC: Northeast 10 Conference (NCAA Division II)-(REVISED)

Northeast 10 Conference (NCAA Division II)

Overview: After the 2020 season was canceled due to COVID-19, the Northeast 10 Conference bounced back with a vengeance in 2021, with two of its teams advancing to postseason play.

The University of New Haven Chargers defeated the Bentley University Falcons twice during a three-week span, with the first win coming in the regular-season finale (31-14) on November 6, followed by another double-digit win (38-13) on November 20. The former win over the Falcons gave the Chargers the NE-10 title, while the latter win not only ended Bentley's season at 9-2 overall but also allowed UNH to advance to the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs. New Haven's season came to a close the following weekend, as the Chargers lost a low-scoring contest at Kutztown to finish their campaign at 10-2 overall.

The NE-10 will have one less program in its ranks heading into the 2022 season, as the Stonehill University Skyhawks (8-2 overall, 6-2 in the NE-10 in 2021) announced on April 5 that they would make the transition into the NCAA Division I (FCS) Northeast Conference (NEC). The surprise move from Stonehill leaves the league with just seven schools taking the field this fall.

THE RFC MYC: Western Athletic Conference (WAC)-(FCS)

Western Athletic Conference (WAC)-(FCS)

Overview: To say that the inaugural season of the newly-rechristened Western Athletic Conference (WAC) is, for lack of a better word, "wacky", was an understatement.

One case in point was the fledgling FCS conference's first-ever champion in the then-defending national champion Sam Houston State University Bearkats. After winning the program's first-ever national championship on May 16, 2021, the Bearkats continued their unlikely unbeaten streak into the fall, winning up to 22 straight games (dating back to the final game of the 2019 season) before Montana State pulled off the stunning upset win over SHSU in the second round of the FCS playoffs. Sam Houston's season ended at 11-1 overall after the 42-19 loss to the eventual national runner-up Bobcats.

The only other WAC program to advance to postseason play last season was Stephen F. Austin. The Lumberjacks finished second in WAC action behind longtime archrival Sam Houston after finishing 6-2 in conference games last fall en route to a final overall regular-season record of 8-3. In the FCS playoffs, SFA gave future WAC foe Incarnate Word all it could handle before falling in overtime, 35-28, in the first round. The Lumberjacks finished the season at 8-4 overall after losing to the Cardinals.

Speaking of the Cardinals, UIW (10-3 overall in 2021) will be one of two new teams to join the WAC in 2022, with (soon-to-be) former Big Sky Conference member Southern Utah (1-10 in 2021) also jumping into the mix this fall. On the other hand, Sam Houston State was declared ineligible for the WAC title due to the Bearkats' transition to the FBS level beginning this season, while Lamar will start its second and final season in the WAC before returning to the Southland Conference in 2023.

Even with just five FCS-playoff eligible teams taking the field this fall, expect SFA and UIW to be the two teams to compete for a place in postseason play when the postseason itself finally does rolls around in late November.

THE RFC MYC: Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC)-(FCS)

Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC)-(FCS)

Overview: Thanks to the hiring of former NFL great
Deion Sanders as their new head coach, the Jackson State University Tigers put themselves, as well as the rest of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), on the map for the traditional fall 2021 season. JSU defeated Prairie View A&M, 27-10, on December 4, to claim the program's 17th SWAC title. However, the Tigers were upset by MEAC champion South Carolina State just two weeks later, on December 18, in the Celebration Bowl. Jackson State's season ended at 11-2 overall after losing to Bulldogs. JSU's only other loss of 2021 came on September 19, when the Tigers fell to Louisiana-Monroe, 12-7.

The only other SWAC team to advance to postseason play in some form was one of the two newest members of the conference, in the form of the Florida A&M University Rattlers, with their long-time rivals from Bethune-Cookman being the other team. FAMU finished second in the East Division at 7-1 in league play en route to a 9-2 regular-season record. Both of the Rattlers' regular-season losses came to Jackson State, as well as to South Florida, during the early weeks of the season. After landing an at-large bid to the FCS playoffs, FAMU's season ended with a first-round loss to Southeastern Louisiana to finish at 9-3 overall.

As for what 2022 holds in store for the SWAC, Jackson State starts the season at No. 22 in the Athlon Sports preseason Top 25 poll, as well as at No. 19 in the Hero Sports poll. Expect the Tigers to be the favorite to win back-to-back SWAC titles this fall, with FAMU, Prairie View, and Alabama A&M having a say in the conversation as well.

THE RFC MYC: Southland Conference (FCS)

Southland Conference (FCS)

Overview: Just three years ago, in 2019, the Southland Conference had 11 schools playing football, with Nicholls State sharing the championship with now-former member Central Arkansas while advancing to the FCS playoffs with another longtime member in Southeastern Louisiana.

Now, almost three years later, entering the 2022 season, the SLC is now down to just five members, thanks to the massive conference realignment that's occurring at the FCS level. Only Houston Baptist, McNeese State, Nicholls, Northwestern State, and Southeastern Louisiana will take the field looking to take home a conference title this fall.

That's because the University of Incarnate Word Cardinals decided to join former fellow SLC members in Abilene Christian, Lamar, Sam Houston State, and Stephen F. Austin in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) this fall, with Sam Houston being declared ineligible for the WAC crown, as the Bearkats are beginning their transition to the FBS level starting this season. UIW clinched the Southland title after going 7-1 in SLC play en route to advancing to the FCS playoffs in 2021. After getting by future WAC foe SFA, 35-28, in overtime, in the first round, the Cardinals gave the Bearkats all they could handle before losing 49-42, in the second round. UIW finished the season at 10-3 overall after losing to Sam Houston State.

With only five teams taking the field this fall, the Southland Conference has entered into a scheduling alliance with the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) for the 2022 and 2023 seasons, respectively. Additionally, Lamar University will return to the SLC in time for the 2023 season in an effort to have the league to maintain its eligibility for an FCS playoff berth.

Also, Texas A&M University-Commerce will begin its transition from the NCAA Division II to the FCS ranks this fall, with the Lions joining the Southland Conference to play over the next four seasons. TAMUC will not be playoff-eligible until 2026.

For now, however, the race for the SLC title in 2022 will be anyone's to win in UIW's absence, with Southeastern Louisiana (9-4 overall, 6-2 in the SLC in 2021) being the favorite to finish on top in the five-team league. The Lions from Hammond, Louisiana eliminated Florida A&M from the FCS playoffs with a 38-14 win in the first round, before falling to eventual national semifinalist (and soon-to-be-former FCS member) James Madison in the second round to see their season come to an end.

THE RFC MYC: Southern Conference (FCS)

Southern Conference (FCS)

Overview: Just seven years after restarting their football program (2015), the East Tennessee State University Buccaneers ascended to the top of the Southern Conference summit in 2021, as they outlasted the Mercer University Bears (7-3 overall, 5-2 in the SoCon in 2021) 38-35 on November 20 to clinch their second conference championship under then-head coach Randy Sanders. After rallying in the closing seconds to beat Kennesaw State in the first round of the FCS playoffs, the Bucs' season came to a close in the second round, as they fell to eventual national champion North Dakota State to finish 11-2 overall and 7-1 in Southern Conference play.

If the Buccaneers are to repeat last year's success, they must do so under new head coach George Quarles. Quarles replaced Sanders, who retired after the traditional fall season ended to focus on his family. Even with the coaching change, expectations remain high for the ETSU program, as the Bucs begin the season ranked fifth in the Hero Sports preseason Top 25 poll.

Speaking of high expectations, Mercer, as well as East Tennessee State, will both begin 2022 ranked in the Athlon Sports Top 25. The Bears will begin the season ranked 17th, with the Bucs just behind them at No. 18. Either way, don't be surprised if the showdown for the SoCon championship comes down to both aforementioned teams. Mercer plays host to ETSU on October 15.

THE RFC MYC: Pioneer Football League (FCS)

Overview: After a close, competitive conference race from start to finish, it was the Davidson College Wildcats from North Carolina that emerged on top of the Pioneer Football League (PFL), finishing 7-1 in league play en route to a final overall record of 8-3.  The Wildcats knocked off the University of San Diego Toreros (7-4, 7-1) at home, 28-16, on September 25, to help propel them to the PFL's automatic bid to the FCS playoffs. Davidson's season ended in the first round after falling to Kennesaw State on the road 48-21.

With the 2022 season just around the corner, expect Davidson to be in the conversation for a third-straight PFL title, while squads like San Diego, Morehead State (7-4, 6-2), and Dayton, among others, pursuing the Wildcats for that all-important auto-bid to the FCS playoffs. Also, FCS newcomer St. Thomas (Minn.)-(7-3, 6-2) looks to build on their inaugural season after finishing tied for third place in the PFL, although the Tommies won't actually become eligible for postseason play until 2025.
