2016 Final Standings-Mid-South Conference (MSC)-(NAIA)

2016 Final Standings-The Sun Conference (TSC)-(NAIA)

Overview: The 2017 season will mark a first for the Mid-South Conference, as that league will have three different divisions: Appalachian, Bluegrass, and Sun. In all, the MSC will have a college football record 20 teams, taking the field this fall, with its membership stretching from Ohio to Florida north to south, and from Eastern North Carolina to West Tennessee east to west. The move allows the MSC to earn three automatic bids to the NAIA playoffs.

THE RFC MYC: Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC)-(NCAA Division II)

2016 Final Standings-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC)-(NCAA Division II)

Overview: The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) finished its final season of football as a 16-team conference in 2016, but not before two of its perennial powerhouse programs gave the league a year to remember.

Ferris State (12-3 overall in 2016) advanced to the national semifinals of the NCAA Division II for only the second time ever, losing to eventual national champion Northwest Missouri State. With multiple preseason Top 5 national rankings in various polls, many observers expect the Bulldogs to make yet another deep postseason run in 2017. Don't be surprised if that happens.

As for the only other team to win at least 10 games last season in Grand Valley State (12-1 in 2016), the Lakers will look to bounce back after being ousted by this aforementioned Ferris State squad in the D-II quarterfinals last November. Like the Bulldogs, the Lakers also begin the 2017 season ranked among the nation's Top 3-5 teams in terms of rankings, as they were ranked No. 2 by Street and Smith's, and No. 3 by Lindy's Sports.

Both FSU and GVSU will go into the 2017 campaign with a new-look GLIAC, as six of its programs defected to the new Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC), while Davenport University from Michigan joins the D-II ranks from the NAIA level for its first football season.

Official Site of GVSU Athletics - GVSU Football Comes In At No. 2 Nationally In Street & Smith's DII Preseason Rankings

Official Site of GVSU Athletics - GVSU Football Comes In At No. 2 Nationally In Street & Smith's DII Preseason Rankings: The 2017 Grand Valley State football season opener is less than 100 days away and nothing spells out college football more than the preseason football magazines that are currently hitting the news stands. Street and Smith's tabbed the Lakers No. 2 behind two-time defending NCAA DII National Champion Northwest Missouri State, while Lindy's picked GVSU as the No. 3 team. This marks the second consecutive year and the 14th  in the last 16 years that the Grand Valley State football programs has been a consensus top six team in preseason publications. Grand Valley State is coming off a 2016 campaign in which they completed regular season and GLIAC action undefeated and advanced to the NCAA Division II quarterfinals. GVSU finished with a 12-1 overall mark in 2016.

THE RFC MYC: Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC)-(NCAA Division II)

2016 Final Standings-Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC)-(NCAA Division II)

2017 Preseason Predictions: Courtesy of glvcsports.com

Overview: If the results of the preseason predictions linked above are any indication, expect both the Southwest Baptist University Bearcats and Truman State University Bulldogs to do battle for the Great Lakes Valley Conference championship in 2017, with both teams squaring off against each other at Kirksville, Mo. on November 4. SBU received six of eight first-place votes, as they were picked to repeat as GLVC champions this fall.

Although they knocked off the Bearcats, 26-16, on October 8, 2016, a loss to McKendree on November 12 cost the Bulldogs a chance to win the GLVC crown outright last fall. As for Southwest Baptist, the Bearcats finished the 2016 campaign at 10-2 overall, losing to Colorado Mines, 63-35, in their first-ever NCAA Division II playoff appearance.

THE RFC MYC: Gulf South Conference (GSC)-(NCAA Division II)

2016 Final Standings-Gulf South Conference (GSC)-(NCAA Division II)

Overview: The University of North Alabama Lions (11-2 overall in 2016) made their first NCAA Division II national championship game appearance since winning the last of their three straight national championships in 1995 last December. But the Lions quest to win their fourth national championship was crushed by Northwest Missouri State in a 29-3 rout. The 2017 campaign will mark the last chance for UNA to win it all, as the Lions accepted an invitation to move up to the NCAA Division I ranks, joining the FCS Big South Conference for football starting in 2018

THE RFC MYC: Southern Athletic Association (SAA)-(NCAA Division III)

Southern Athletic Association (SAA)-(NCAA Division III)

2016 Final Standings- Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SAA)

Overview: Despite a 9-1 regular season record in 2016, it was that one loss-a 34-10 setback at Washington (Mo.) on October 1-that cost the Berry College (Ga.) Vikings their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division III playoffs. With Washington-as well as fellow Midwestern rival Chicago-now out of the Southern Athletic Association (SAA), expect Berry to be the team to beat in 2017. Meanwhile, the SAA will take a "Texas Two-Step" for this season with the addition of Austin and Trinity (Tex.), as both teams make the move from the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC). The addition of both institutions brings the total number of schools in the SAA that play football to nine.

FCS: Duquesne named preseason favorite

Click here for the complete press release, courtesy of northeastconference.org

RFC Quick Analysis: Despite finishing 8-3 during the regular season in 2016, the Duquesne University Dukes found themselves on the outside looking in once the FCS playoffs rolled around last November. That was because of St. Francis (Pa.), whose Red Flash squad downed the Dukes 14-10 on October 21 to win their first-ever Northeast Conference crown. Don't be surprised if the battle for the NEC title comes down to both Pennsylvania teams, as they'll do battle in Pittsburgh on, you guessed it, Saturday, October 21, 2017.

FCS: Sam Houston State picked to win the Southland Conference crown

Southland Conference - Sam Houston State Favored in 2017 Southland Football Preseason Poll

RFC Quick Analysis: For most of the last six years, the Sam Houston State University Bearkats have been the standard bearer in the Southland Conference, averaging at least 11 wins per season over that span, while also making multiple deep FCS playoff runs along the way. Therefore, it's only fitting that the Bearkats once again will be the team that everyone else will chase for the SLC title this season. With so many key players-including senior quarterback Jeremiah Briscoe-returning, don't be surprised if SHSU has another long stay in postseason play come November, and maybe December.

Appalachian State is the team to beat in the Sun Belt for 2017

Sun Belt Conference - Mountaineers Picked to Win League Title in 2017: NEW ORLEANS – The Appalachian State Mountaineers are the favorites to win the 2017 Sun Belt Conference Football Championship according to the league’s 12 head coaches and selected members of the media. The Sun Belt released the preseason poll Thursday in advance of the Sun Belt’s annual media day that begins Sunday, July 23.

RFC Quick Analysis: The fact that Appalachian State has favored to win the Sun Belt Conference crown for 2017 should come as no surprise, as the Mountaineers are coming off of back-to-back bowl wins over the last two seasons, as well as a 10-3 overall mark in 2016. Not bad for a program that has been FBS eligible for just two full seasons. Still, don't count out the likes of Arkansas State and Troy in the battle for the Sun Belt title this fall.

1981 NCAA DIII Football Championship: Widener vs. Dayton

Let's now turn the clock back to 1981, as Widener does battle with Dayton for the NCAA Division III national championship. This was back when Phenix City, Alabama hosted the Stagg Bowl for so many years during the 1970's, as well as deep into the 1980's. Believe it or not, the 2017 campaign will be the final season that the Stagg Bowl will be played in Salem, Virginia. The D-III title game will be played in Shenandoah, Texas over the next two years, in 2018 and 2019, followed by Canton, Ohio in 2020 and 2021.

2016 Final Standings- Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC)

Overview: After finishing a combined 19-6 overall over two full seasons, 2015 and 2016, respectively-which included three combined NCAA Division II playoff wins during that span-the Tuskegee University Golden Tigers hope to not only make another deep postseason run in 2017 but also win an SIAC title along the way. But crossing the state line from Alabama to Georgia, the Albany State University Golden Rams also hope to make their case for a league crown, and then some, under first-year head coach Gabe Giardina.

USA South Athletic Conference (USAC)-(NCAA Division III)

2016 Final Standings- USA South Athletic Conference (USAC)

Overview: The Huntingdon University Hawks held off the Maryville College (Tenn.) Scots in a thrilling 28-24 to win their second straight USA South Athletic Conference (USAC) championship in 2016. They lost to Wheaton in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs, 45-10. As for the Scots, they had to settle for a share of the USAC crown with a 6-1 mark in league action, while finding themselves on the outside looking in when postseason play rolled around last November.

Looking ahead to 2017, the Brevard College Tornados from North Carolina join the USAC and D-III ranks from the South Atlantic Conference and NCAA Division II, while Ferrum will leave for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) in 2018.

Overview: The Newberry College Wolves (10-2 overall in 2016) finished unbeaten in South Atlantic Conference (SAC) play at 7-0 to win their first-ever outright league title last fall. But their NCAA Division II playoff run was abruptly interrupted by Tuskegee in a stunning 35-33 upset loss in the first round

Going into 2017, there will be a slight change in the SAC's membership, with Brevard College dropping down to the NCAA Division III ranks, while Limestone College will join the SAC as an associate member after spending their first three years as an independent.

2016 Final Standings-Mountain East Conference (MEC)

Overview: The Shepherd University Rams followed up their 2015 NCAA Division II national runner-up season with another deep playoff run in 2016. Sadly, however, that run ended with a stunning upset loss to eventual 2016 national runner-up North Alabama in the national semifinals to finish the season at 13-1 overall. Meanwhile, the first-ever postseason appearance for Fairmont State (10-2 overall in 2016) ended in the first round of the D-II playoffs, as the Falcons fell to Indiana (Pa.) by a lopsided score of 62-13.

Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC)-(NCAA Division III)

2016 Final Standings-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC)

Overview: The Randolph-Macon College Yellow Jackets (9-2 overall in 2016) outlasted seven other teams in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference to finish 6-1 within ODAC action, and win their league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs. R-MC's postseason run, though, was cut short in the first round, as the Yellow Jackets fell to Johns Hopkins on the road, 42-21.

Changes are on the way for the ODAC-both on and off the field for 2017-as Catholic leaves to join the all-new New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC), while Ferrum will join the conference in 2018.
