THE RFC MYC: Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC)-(NCAA Division III)

Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC)-(NCAA Division III)

Overview: The University of Redlands Bulldogs finished the 2021 season undefeated against teams not named the Linfield University Wildcats. While the Bulldogs finished 8-0 against opponents other than the Oregon-based Wildcats, as well as 6-0 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action last fall, both of their losses not only came to Linfield, neither game was even close.

But to even earn an opportunity for a rematch against Linfield, Redlands had to take care of business in SCIAC play. And the Bulldogs did just that, as they outscored their SCIAC opponents 256-92, with their closest games coming against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (7-3, 4-2 in 2021) in a 22-19 road win on October 2, as well as a 28-24 home win over Chapman (7-3, 4-2) on October 23. Both wins turned out to be the difference in not only giving Redlands the SCIAC title but also the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs.

However, against the likes of Linfield, as mentioned above, it was the Wildcats that won convincingly in both meetings, winning 51-10 in the regular-season contest on September 17, and 44-10 in the first round of the D-III playoffs on November 20. The latter loss to Linfield ended Redlands' season at 8-2 overall.

As the 2022 season approaches, Redlands received five of seven first-place votes to earn the nod as the team to beat in the SCIAC this fall. Still, don't be surprised if C-M-S, Chapman, and Cal Lutheran (6-3, 3-3) all give the Bulldogs a tremendous challenge before the season comes to a close.

THE RFC MYC: Northwest Conference (NWC)-(NCAA Division III)

Northwest Conference (NWC)-(NCAA Division III)

Overview: The Linfield University Wildcats continued to make history in 2021, as they not only won their 43rd Northwest Conference (NWC) championship overall last fall but also extended their streak of consecutive winning seasons to 65 straight dating back to 1956. The Wildcats finished the regular season undefeated as well, finishing at 9-0, as well as 7-0 in NWC action.

In the NCAA Division III playoffs, Linfield stunned St. John's (Minn) on the road to advance to the second round. However, the Wildcats' season came to a close there, as eventual national champion Mary Hardin-Baylor cruised to a 49-24 win on December 4. Linfield's season ended at 11-1 overall after losing to UMHB.

With a preseason ranking of #7 in the d3football.com poll, expect Linfield to dominate the NWC once again this fall. But don't be surprised if George Fox (6-3, 6-1 in 2021), Pacific (6-3, 5-2), and Whitworth (7-3, 4-3) give the Wildcats all they can handle before all is said and done this season.
