THE RFC MYC:Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC)-(NCAA Division II)

Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC)-(NCAA Division II)

Overview: The Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) struggled for the most part on the football field last fall, with just three of its' seven squads finishing the 2022 season with a winning season.

Of those three teams, two of them finished with at least nine wins. One of those teams turned out to be the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds, who won the GLVC title after finishing unbeaten in league play at 6-0 as well as at 9-1 overall. The Greyhounds season ended in the first round of the NCAA Division II playoffs after Pittsburg State shut them out 35-0 on November 19. UIndy's season finished at 9-2 overall after losing to the Gorillas.

The only other team to finish 2022 with nine was the Truman State University Bulldogs from Kirksville, Missouri. The Bulldogs reeled off eight straight wins after losing their season opener to Davenport 20-19 on September 3

But UIndy ended Truman's quest to take home the GLVC title with a 28-14 loss in the regular season finale on November 19. Still, the Bulldogs ended their season on a winning note, as they rallied to defeat Tiffin for the second time in as many meetings-the Bulldogs beat the Dragons in their regular season meeting on September 24-to claim their third straight  America's Crossroads Bowl championship on December 3, and finish at 9-2 overall.

The only other GLVC squad to finish their 2022 campaign with a winning record was the Southwest Baptist University Bearcats out of Bolivar, Missouri. The Bearcats finished their season at 6-5 overall and 4-2 in GLVC play, good enough for third place in the conference. SBU scored at least 41 points in five of its' six wins last season.

Looking ahead to 2023, expect UIndy and Truman State compete for the GLVC title once again this fall, with the Greyhounds predicted to repeat as conference champions, while the Bulldogs came in second, followed by Southwest Baptist in third place.

Meanwhile, the GLVC will go into this fall with one new team taking the football field, with the Upper Iowa University Peacocks from Fayette, Iowa joining the league after moving from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) during the offseason. The addition of UIU brings the total of football-playing schools in the GLVC to eight.

THE RFC MYC: Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC)-(NCAA Division II)

Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC)-(NCAA Division II)

Overview: The Ferris State University Bulldogs made history again in 2022, as they crushed the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers to win their second straight NCAA Division II national championship.

Over the past two seasons, Ferris State has compiled a solid overall record of 28-1, with their lone loss during that span coming to Grand Valley State in a tough 22-21 setback on October 15. Still, the Bulldogs used that defeat as a spark for the rest of their season, as they won their final nine games to finish at 14-1 overall. That followed the undefeated 2021 season where Ferris State finished at 15-0 overall.

In fact, dating back to the start of the 2018 season, the Bulldogs have lost just three games in all, excluding the 2020 season that was canceled due to COVID-19. The last time Ferris State lost at least two games was in 2016, when the Bulldogs finished at 12-3 overall, losing to eventual national championship Northwest Missouri State in the national semifinals.

As for GVSU, the Lakers stunning comeback win over Ferris State in the annual Anchor-Bone Classic helped them not only win another Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) championship but also finished the regular season undefeated at 6-0 in GLIAC action, as well as 10-0 overall.

The NCAA Division II playoffs, however, were a different story for Grand Valley State, despite being seeded first out of Super Region 3. After outlasting Northwest Missouri State 13-8 in the second round on November 26, Ferris State avenged its' only defeat of the 2022 season in ousting the Lakers, 24-21, in the national quarterfinals a week later. GVSU finished the season at 12-1 after losing to the Bulldogs.

What does the 2023 season-and beyond-hold in store for the GLIAC? If the Lindy's Sports preseason poll is any indication, Ferris State will once again to be the team to beat, not only in the GLIAC but in Division II in general, with Grand Valley State not far behind at #2.

Still, don't be surprised if fledgling program Davenport (8-3, 4-2) and Saginaw Valley State (8-3, 3-3) both pose a challenge to the stranglehold that Ferris State and GVSU have held on the GLIAC in recent seasons.

Finally, in off-the-field news, the GLIAC will expand its' membership by one team in time for the 2024 season. That's when Roosevelt University of Chicago will join the conference for its' first season at the NCAA Division II level, as the Lakers begin their transition from the NAIA.

THE RFC MYC: Mid-States Football Association (MSFA)-(NAIA)

Mid-States Football Association (MSFA)-(NAIA)

Overview: The Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) saw both of its' eventual
"league" or division champions go undefeated in conference play in 2022
, with at least one team winning multiple playoff games, while the other was "one and done" after one round. Additionally, a third team's season ended in the quarterfinals after losing to the eventual national champion.

That one team was the Indiana Wesleyan University Wildcats from Marion, Indiana. In only their fifth season of existence, IWU finished 7-0 in MSFA play to win the Mideast League title, as well as 9-1 at the end of the regular season. In their first-ever NAIA playoff appearance, the Wildcats knocked off more established programs such as Avila and Benedictine (Kan.) before succumbing to eventual national champion Northwestern (Iowa) in the national semifinals to finish their historic season at 11-2 overall.

On the other hand, the other two MSFA teams that advanced to the NAIA playoffs saw their respective squads seasons end in the first round. The Marian University Knights advanced to postseason play after finishing second in the Mideast League at 7-1 in MSFA action and 8-1 overall. The Knights stomped St. Xavier in the first round before losing to Northwestern in the quarterfinals to finish their season at 9-2 overall.

In the Midwest League, the Saint Xavier University Cougars held off the University of Saint Francis Saints (7-3, 6-1 in 2022) from Joliet, Illinois on the final day of the regular season to win that division crown, finishing unbeaten in conference play along the way. SXU fell to Marian in the first round of the NAIA playoffs to end the Cougars season at 9-3 overall.

With the 2023 season just around the corner, don't be surprised if any of these aforementioned teams advance to the NAIA playoffs in November. However, the MSFA will have one less team in its' Midwest League mix, as Trinity International University of Deerfield, Illinois announced the shutdown of its' athletics department on February 16.

Also, Olivet Nazarene University (7-4, 5-2) will look to carry its' season-ending three-game winning streak into 2023, while Roosevelt University (7-3, 4-3) will spend one final season in the NAIA before beginning the transition into the NCAA Division II ranks in 2024.

THE RFC MYC: Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC)-(NCAA Division III)

Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC)-(NCAA Division III)

Overview: The University of Mount Union Purple Raiders once again dominated the competition in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC), as they finished regular season play at 9-0 in conference action, as well as 10-0 overall, in claiming the program's 33rd conference championship all time in 2022.

However, Mount Union's quest to win their program's 14th national championship fell by the wayside at the Stagg Bowl on December 16, as the North Central College Cardinals held off the Purple Raiders 28-21. The tough loss to North Central ended Mount Union's season at 14-1 overall.

Looking ahead to 2023, with a #1 preseason ranking from Lindy's Sports, expect Mount Union to not only be favored to win another OAC title, but also try to win their first national title since 2017. That was when the Purple Raiders shut out Mary Hardin-Baylor 12-0 for the championship on December 15 to claim their 13th national championship.

Still, expect the likes of John Carroll (8-2, 8-1), Baldwin-Wallace (7-3, 7-2), Heidelberg (7-3, 6-3), Marietta (6-4, 5-4), and Muskingum (5-5, 4-5) to be serious contenders for both the OAC title and/or postseason play this fall.

THE RFC MYC: Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA)-(NCAA Division III)

Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA)-(NCAA Division III)

Overview: Despite having six of its' seven squads finishing the 2022 season with a .500 or better overall record, the race for the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) title came down to two teams whose names started with the letters "A" and "L", on the final day of the regular season.

Those teams were the Albion College Britons and the Alma College Scots, respectively, in a showdown game between two then-unbeaten teams at 9-0 that was played on November 12.

After a close contest that was played tightly from start to finish, it was the homestanding Scots that stood alone on top of the MIAA, beating the Britons, 34-31. While Alma finished the regular season undefeated at 6-0 in conference play and 10-0 overall, Albion's season ended in heartbreaking fashion, at 5-1 in MIAA action, as well at 9-1 overall.

In the NCAA Division III playoffs, Alma continued to make history, with the Scots shutting down Mount St. Joseph, 41-21, in the first round, for their first-ever playoff win. However, their season ended in the second round, as Aurora defeated and eliminated Alma, 48-26, to finish at 11-1 overall.

Looking ahead to 2023, don't be surprised if the battle for the MIAA title once again comes to Albion and Alma, with Albion hosting the regular-season finale on November 11 (Veterans Day). But if Albion hopes to win an unprecedented 39th conference championship in its' program's illustrious history, the Britons must do it under a new head coach in Travis Rundle. Rundle replaced Dustin Beurer, who resigned after four seasons to take the head coaching job at NCAA Division II Northwood University in Midland, Michigan.

THE RFC MYC: North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC)-(NCAA Division III)

North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC)-(NCAA Division III)

Overview: The DePauw University Tigers from Greencastle, Indiana won their second straight outright North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) championship after finishing league play at 7-1, as well as at 9-1 overall. The Tigers lone regular season loss came to another team of Tigers in the form of Wittenberg University (5-5, 4-4 in 2022) on October 8.

The game of the year in the NCAC came on October 1. That was when DePauw outlasted Denison (8-2, 6-2) on the road, 17-13. That win helped the Tigers eventually clinch the NCAC title, culminating in a 49-14 victory over longtime archrival Wabash (7-3, 6-2) in the annual Monon Bell Game on November 12. DePauw fell at Carnegie-Mellon in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs the following week to finish its' 2022 season at 9-2 overall.

Expect the upcoming 2023 season to be another competitive campaign in the NCAC, with DePauw looking to hold off challenges from Denison, Wabash, Ohio Wesleyan (6-4, 6-2), Wooster (6-4. 4-4), and Wittenberg in hopes of winning their third straight outright conference championship.

THE RFC MYC: Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC)-(NCAA Division III)

Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC)-(NCAA Division III)

Overview: Aside from the NFL Bengals and the now-Big 12 Conference member University of Cincinnati Bearcats, the Mount St. Joseph University Lions became the latest team to represent the Cincinnati area well on the football field within the last two years, as they won their share of close games to claim the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) championship in 2022.

However, after finishing the regular season unbeaten at 7-0 in HCAC action, as well as 10-0 overall, MSJ saw its season come to a sudden, sad end in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs, as Alma cruised to a 41-21 win over the Lions on November 19. With the loss to the Scots, the Lions' season came to a close at 10-1 overall, with five of those wins coming by nine points or less. One of those wins came in the final week of the regular season one week earlier, with MSJ outlasting eventual HCAC runner-up Rose-Hulman, 40-31. Both teams entered that critical contest at 6-0 in conference play, with the Engineers settling for a final overall record of 6-4, as well as 6-1 in the HCAC after losing to the Lions.

Looking ahead to 2023, MSJ will enter the upcoming season with the obvious target on its' back, with Rose-Hulman, Hanover (5-5, 5-2), and Franklin (4-6, 4-3) all having a potential Say as to which team will ultimately come out on top in the HCAC when the second weekend in November arrives.

THE RFC MYC: Southern Athletic Association (SAA)-(NCAA Division III)

Southern Athletic Association (SAA)-(NCAA Division III)

Overview: The Trinity University Tigers from San Antonio, Texas cruised to an unbeaten regular season en route to winning the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) title in 2022. The Tigers finished the regular season at 7-0 in SAA play, as well as at 10-0 overall.

In the NCAA Division III playoffs, Trinity outlasted Hardin-Simmons in a low-scoring 14-7 defensive struggle in the first round, and then gave Mary Hardin-Baylor all it could handle in the second round before succumbing to the Crusaders 24-17. The Tigers finished their 2022 campaign at 11-1 overall after losing to UMHB in postseason play for the second straight season.

Looking ahead to 2023, expect Trinity to be the team to beat again in the SAA, as the Tigers will look to win their third straight outright title. However, expect Birmingham-Southern (7-3, 5-2), Berry (7-3, 5-2), Centre (6-4, 4-3) and Rhodes (5-5, 3-4) to be among the primary challengers for the conference championship this fall. Both B-SC and Berry took Trinity to the limit in separate contests against the Tigers before losing 23-20 and 21-14, respectively, last fall.

Finally, looking forward to 2024 and beyond, the SAA hopes to flex its' football muscles even more by 2025. That's when Southwestern University of Georgetown, Texas, as well as Trinity, will join the league as full-time members at that time. Both teams will play full SAA schedules in football as associate members in 2023 and 2024.

THE RFC MYC: Gulf South Conference (GSC)-(NCAA Division II)

Gulf South Conference (GSC)-(NCAA Division II)

Overview: The Gulf South Conference (GSC) had a down season in 2022, as only three of its' eight squads finished the season with a winning record, with two of those teams posting a pair of double-digit win seasons.

However, both of those teams represented the GSC well in the NCAA Division II playoffs, with both eventual conference co-champions in Delta State and West Florida, respectively, advancing to the second round. UWF avenged their lone regular-season loss to DSU in a 45-42 double-overtime defeat on September 24, as the Argonauts downed the Statesmen 38-27 on November 26.

While Delta State's season ended at 11-2 overall following the loss to West Florida, the Argonauts advanced to the quarterfinal round of the D-II playoffs. That's where they would defeat Wingate 45-14 to advance to the national semifinals. UWF's season ended at 12-2 overall after losing 38-17 eventual national champion Ferris State on December 10.

The only other GSC team to post winning season last fall was the University of West Georgia Wolves from Carrollton, Georgia. Despite finishing the regular season at 8-2 overall and 5-2 in GSC action, which included a stunning 52-42 late season win over DSU, UWG was snubbed for an NCAA Division II berth in 2022. The Wolves fell to a Mississippi College squad that lost its last four games to finish its season at a disappointing 4-7 overall, as well as to UWF.

Looking ahead to 2023 and beyond, the GSC will undergo multiple changes to its football membership over the next several seasons, with Chowan University of Murfreesboro, North Carolina joining the conference for the next two seasons, eventually moving on to Conference Carolinas by 2025.. The Hawks finished the 2022 season at 7-4 overall, and 7-1 in CIAA play in 2022, losing to Fayetteville State in the conference title game.

In addition to Chowan becoming an affiliate member of the GSC, Erskine College from Due West, South Carolina will join the league as an associate member for the 2024 season only. During this transition period, Shorter University of Rome, Georgia will play their 2024 football campaign as an independent program in anticipation of joining Conference Carolinas in time for the start of the 2025 season. Those three teams will eventually join Barton, North Greenville, and UNC Pembroke in the CC by then.

In the meantime, though, expect Delta State and West Florida to do battle for the GSC title this fall, with the Argonauts coming to Cleveland, Mississippi to square off against the Statesmen on October 21.

THE RFC MYC: The Sun Conference (TSC)-(NAIA)

The Sun Conference (TSC)-(NAIA)

Overview: In a historic 2022 season for The Sun Conference (TSC), two of its' teams combined to win 19 games, with one of them pulling off one playoff upset after another to advance to its' first-ever NAIA national championship game.

The first aforementioned squad was the Keiser University Seahawks from West Palm Beach, Florida. In just their fifth season of existence, Keiser pulled off multiple upset wins over established programs such as Bethel (Tenn.), then-defending national champion Morningside, and Grand View, before losing to Northwestern (Iowa) in the national championship game on December 17. The Seahawks finished their 2022 campaign at 10-4 overall, with three of those losses coming to NCAA Division II teams like Valdosta State and Mississippi College, as well as another program that's transitioning to the FCS ranks in Lindenwood.

The other aforementioned team in this post hails from just down the road in Miami Gardens, Florida, with the St. Thomas University Bobcats also posting a solid season last fall. However, despite finishing the season at 9-2 overall, the Bobcats found themselves on the outside looking in when "Selection Sunday" in the NAIA arrived, losing to FCS Butler, as well as to Keiser.

A quick look ahead will see one new member join the TSC in 2023, as the Thomas University Nighthawks out of Thomasville, Georgia, will start their inaugural season of football. The addition of Thomas brings the total number of football-playing schools in the conference to eight teams this fall.

Still, expect St. Thomas, as well as Keiser, to be the two main challengers for the TSC crown this season, with several other squads in Ave Maria (6-3, 3-2), Webber International (6-4, 3-3), and Southeastern (6-4, 2-3), hoping to disrupt the status quo.

THE RFC MYC: Mid-South Conference (MSC)-(NAIA)

Mid-South Conference (MSC)-(NAIA)

Overview: Two teams from the Mid-South Conference (M-SC) advanced to the NAIA playoffs in 2022, only to suffer a couple of heartbreaking losses to end their respective seasons.

One of those squads was the Bethel University Wildcats out of McKenzie, Tennessee. The Wildcats finished the regular season unbeaten at 8-0 in winning the M-SC crown en route to also finishing at 11-0 overall. But Bethel's season came to a screeching halt in the first round of the playoffs, as eventual national runner-up Keiser knocked off the Wildcats, 27-17, to close out their season at 11-1.

As for the only other team from the M-SC to advance to postseason play, the Lindsey Wilson College Blue Raiders from Columbia, Kentucky finished the regular season with a 9-1 record, losing only to Bethel 21-16 on October 29. After surviving a late rally from Reinhardt to win 23-22 in the first round of the playoffs on November 19, the Blue Raiders season came to a close with a tough 10-7 loss at Grand View (Iowa) the following week. Lindsey Wilson's season ended at 10-2 overall following the quarterfinal loss to Grand View.

The M-SC will see a slight reduction in its membership going into the 2023 season, with the University of Pikeville leaving for the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC), while Thomas More University has begun the transition to the NCAA Division II level. The loss of both aforementioned Kentucky-based institutions leaves the league with just seven football-playing schools for this fall.

Even with the loss of Pikeville and Thomas More, expect both Bethel and Lindsey Wilson, respectively, to do battle for another M-SC title this season, with Georgetown (Ky.)-(7-3 overall, 5-3 in the M-SC in 2022) having a potential say in the conference championship conversation.
