Overview: The Berry College Vikings from Mount Berry, Georgia won their fourth straight Southern Athletic Association (SAA) championship in 2019, finishing conference play at 7-1 en route to a final overall record of 9-2. The Vikings season ended in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs after losing to Huntingdon at home, 27-24, on November 23.

Despite playing only four games during the spring of 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Berry program added another conference championship trophy to their trophy case, as the Vikings edged the Hendrix College Warriors from Conway, Arkansas, 21-20, in the first-ever SAA championship game on March 15. Berry won its fifth straight SAA title to finish the shortened season undefeated at 4-0 overall. Three of the Vikings' four games, all wins, were decided by three points or less.

If the shortened spring season is any indication, expect Berry to be the team the beat again, as the Vikings shoot for their sixth straight conference championship this fall. But expect Centre and Hendrix, with both respective squads finishing 3-1 overall this past season, to give Berry quite the battle along the way. Also, Birmingham-Southern and Trinity (Tex.), who both finished the 2019 season at 7-3 overall, will be teams to be reckoned with.

Finally, there will be one less program in the SAA for this season, as Austin College from Sherman, Texas has left the league to join the American Southwest Conference (ASC) as an associate member for football only. The departure of the Kangaroos leaves the SAA with eight teams for the 2021 season.
