THE RFC MYC: Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC)-(NCAA Division III)

Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC)-(NCAA Division III)

Overview: It was a "tale of one-and-a-half seasons" for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC), with one team finishing the regular season undefeated, only to lose in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs, while the other team finished its pandemic-shortened season unbeaten, but had to settle for a conference championship because of the cancelation of all fall sports national championships, including football.

In 2019, the Bridgewater College Eagles cruised to a 10-0 overall record in claiming the last full-season ODAC crown. But the Eagles saw their postseason dreams derailed in the first round of the D-III dance, with Delaware Valley rallying in the second half to defeat and eliminate Bridgewater, 30-22, on November 23.

In the spring of 2021, the Randolph-Macon College Yellow Jackets cruised to an unbeaten record during the abbreviated season, defeating the Emory & Henry College Wasps in the inaugural ODAC championship game, 13-10, on April 3. The Yellow Jackets finished their shortened schedule at 5-0 overall, following up a 9-2 record from 2019.

The ODAC will multiple changes over the next several seasons, starting this fall with longtime member Emory & Henry beginning the transition process to the NCAA Division II level in 2021. The Wasps will look to join the South Atlantic Conference with the hopes of playing a full conference schedule.

But the changes don't stop there, as Southern Virginia University has left for the USA South Athletic Conference (USAC), with Averett looking to take SVU's place in time for the 2022 season. Both moves will still leave the ODAC with at least eight football-playing schools by then.

In the meantime, expect yet another competitive season in this unusually unpredictable conference with mostly Virginia schools once again this fall.
