THE RFC MYC: North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC)-(NCAA Division III)

North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC)-(NCAA Division III)

Overview: If the 2018 season wasn't competitive enough for the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC), it was even more so for the 2019 season. After three teams-Denison, Wabash, and Wittenberg-all finished in a three-way tie for first place at 8-1 in NCAC action, with Denison winning the tiebreaker to advance to the NCAA Division III playoffs in 2018, those same three squads finished in a similar situation to end 2019, with all three teams finishing 7-2 in conference play.

Only this time, though, it was Wabash (7-4 overall in 2019) that won the right to represent the NCAC as the automatic qualifier for the D-III playoffs. That was thanks to the Little Giants getting two critical wins over Denison (8-2) on September 28, as well as over Wittenberg (7-3) on October 19. Both wins helped offset a pair of league losses to Wooster (6-4 overall, 5-4 in the NCAC in 2019) and DePauw (6-4, 6-3) to help create the three-way tie for the NCAC crown. Wabash's season ended in the first round with a 51-15 loss to eventual national champion North Central on November 23.

After an abbreviated spring 2021 season that saw only three teams in action in Denison (1-0), DePauw (2-0), and Ohio Wesleyan (0-2), the NCAC will look ahead to what will likely be a full fall 2021 season, with this year's conference championship being anyone's to win. While Wittenberg and Wabash, as well as Denison, figure to find themselves in the championship conversation once again, don't be surprised if another trio of teams in Ohio Wesleyan (7-3 overall, 6-3 in the NCAC in 2019), DePauw and Wooster have a say in which team (s) finish on top this fall.
