THE RFC MYC: Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC)-(NCAA Division III)

Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC)-(NCAA Division III)

Overview: The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) sent two of its teams to postseason play in 2019, with the Chapman University Panthers having the best season in their program's history, while the University of Redlands Bulldogs continued to prove why they have one of the best programs at the NCAA Division III level with another playoff appearance.

Chapman cruised to an unbeaten regular season just two years ago, as the Panthers finished a perfect 7-0 in the SCIAC, while also finishing at 9-0 for the first time ever. They outlasted perennial D-III powerhouse Linfield 68-65 in triple overtime on November 23, 2019, for their first-ever playoff win. However, Chapman's season would come to a close the following week, as St. John's (Minn.) stomped the Panthers in a convincing 55-26 triumph in the second round. The loss to the Johnnies ended Chapman's campaign at a program-best 10-1 overall.

As for Redlands, the Bulldogs had another banner season in 2019, with their lone loss of the regular season coming to Chapman in a close 21-18 contest on October 12. After settling for a second-place finish in the SCIAC at 6-1 to end the regular season, Redlands saw its season come to a close after losing to Mary Hardin-Baylor 43-12 in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs. The Bulldogs finished their season at 9-2 overall after the loss to the Crusaders.

Like many D-II and D-III conferences, the SCIAC chose not to conduct a 2020 season due to  COVID-19. But when the 2021 season kicks off on September 3, a familiar face will be missing from the SCIAC landscape, as officials at Occidental College announced on October 13, 2020, that they had eliminated their football program due to multiple factors, including the pandemic. The loss of Occidental leaves the SCIAC with just seven schools playing football this fall.
