Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC)-(NAIA)
Overview: Over the past two seasons, 2019 and 2020-21, the Grand View University Vikings from Des Moines, Iowa had the best combined overall record in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) at 20-2 overall. The Vikings finished the 2019 season at 13-1 overall, losing to eventual national champion Morningside in the semifinal round of the NAIA playoffs. GVU followed up that campaign with an undefeated mark of 6-0 to finish the regular season in 2020, defeating Dordt in the first round before falling to eventual national runner-up Northwestern (Iowa) in the quarterfinals to finish at 7-1 overall.
The Baker University Wildcats from Baldwin City, Kansas also had a remarkable two-year run, finishing the 2019 season at 9-3 overall after losing to Kansas Wesleyan in the first round of the NAIA playoffs. Baker fared better at the end of the 2020-21 campaign, outlasting Olivet Nazarene in a high-scoring 59-54 contest in the first round, before seeing its season end at 7-1 overall with a 45-29 loss to Morningside in the quarterfinals.
With Grand View (No. 5), Baker (No. 7), and Benedictine (Kan.)-(No. 17) all ranked in the NAIA preseason poll, expect the race for the 2021 HAAC crown to be close and competitive until the final week of the regular season.
