2017 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Final Standings (Courtesy of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference)
Overview: The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) once again proved that it was one of the most competitive conferences at the NCAA Division II level in 2017, as eight of its 16 teams won at least seven games last season. Additionally, the PSAC placed four of its squads in the NCAA Division II playoffs last fall, with the Indiana University (Pa.) Crimson Hawks advancing to the national semifinals before being upset at home by eventual national runner-up West Florida to finish 13-1 overall.
While IUP made its deep postseason run in 2017, the other three playoff participants from the PSAC weren't as fortunate, with Shippensburg (10-2 overall) being ousted by fellow East Division foe West Chester (9-4) in the first round, while the Golden Rams themselves fell to the Crimson Hawks in the second round the following week. Finally, the California University (Pa.) Vulcans (9-3) saw their season end in the first round, falling to Assumption, 40-31.
The upcoming 2018 season-and beyond-has at least two membership changes, as Cheyney dropped its football program at the end of the 2017 season, while perennial D-II power Shepherd University out of West Virginia will make the move from the Mountain East Conference to the PSAC as a full member in time for the 2019 season.
