2017 CIAA Final Standings (Courtesy of the Central Athletic Association)
Overview: The 2017 season for the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) turned out to be a tale of two divisions, with Virginia State (10-1 overall) and Bowie State (9-2 overall) both advancing to the NCAA Division II playoffs, only to see their respective seasons end in the first round with losses to Gulf South Conference squads. The Trojans beat the Bulldogs, 47-35, on October 14, to eventually clinch the Northern Division, then proceeded to crush Southern Division champion Fayetteville State (6-5 overall) to claim the overall CIAA championship on November 11.
Once postseason play arrived, however, both CIAA squads found themselves "one and done" after the first weekend, with Virginia State being crushed by visiting West Georgia, while Bowie State fell to Delta State. As for Fayetteville State, the Broncos were one of just two Southern Division teams to finish the 2017 season with a winning record, with Winston-Salem State finishing 6-4 last fall. A third team, St. Augustine's, finished 5-5 overall and 4-1 in CIAA South action.
As the 2018 season rapidly approaches, the big question affecting the CIAA is this: Can Virginia State and Bowie State return to the playoffs, or will Fayetteville State and the rest of the Southern Division close the gap against the Northern Division? To paraphrase one of those old sayings: "That's why they play the games on the field instead of on paper."
