New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC)-(NCAA Division III)
Overview: The Frostburg State University Bobcats were the class of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) in what was their final season as an NCAA Division III member in 2018. They finished NJAC play undefeated at 8-0 in winning an automatic bid to the D-III playoffs.
The Bobcats downed Western New England 42-24 in the first round, before being crushed by Johns Hopkins 58-27 in the second round. That game turned out to be their final contest as a D-III member, finishing the season at 10-1 overall. Additionally, Frostburg State finished 31-4 overall over the past three seasons, including back-to-back NCAA playoff appearances over the past two seasons.
Frostburg State isn't the only team that's leaving the NJAC for greener pastures. Southern Virginia (3-7 overall, 2-7 in the NJAC) has left for the more geographically-friendly Old Dominion Athletic Conference as a football-only member this fall. The Knights have won just eight games combined dating back to the beginning of the 2014 season.
Now that Frostburg State is off to the Mountain East Conference and NCAA Division II ranks, the race for the 2019 NJAC title could be wide open from start to finish. Expect Montclair State (8-2, 7-2), Rowan (6-4, 5-4), Salisbury (8-3, 7-2) and Wesley (7-4, 5-4) to be among the teams fighting for that coveted automatic bid to the playoffs this fall.
