Editor's Note: With this being Independence Day in the United States, here's a brief preview of the teams that are independent, which are institutions whose football programs currently don't belong to any conference. So, without further ado, here we go.
NCAA Division II
2012 Profiles (2011 overall record in parentheses)
North Greenville (11-3): In the last two years, the Crusaders have compiled a combined overall record of 20-6. That mark includes winning the 2010 NCCAA Victory Bowl, followed by an unlikely appearance in the quarterfinals of the 2011 NCAA Division II playoffs. If they hope to return to postseason play, the Crusaders must do so under new head coach Carroll McCray. He replaced Jamey Chadwell, who resigned to become the head coach at Delta State. NGU opens the 2012 season with three straight road games, including a trip to Tennessee Tech of the FCS Ohio Valley Conference on September 6.
Oklahoma Panhandle State (3-7): The Aggies look ahead to 2012 after a disappointing 2011 season.
South Dakota Mines (1-10): Aside from a trip to Missouri Southern on October 6, the Hardrockers will play all of their 2012 contests in either North or South Dakota.
UNC Pembroke (8-3): Despite posting a winning record in 2011, the Braves were snubbed for a D-II playoff berth. The season opener at national semifinalist, Winston-Salem State, could decide if they're playoff worthy in 2012.
