THE RFC MYC: Pacific 12/Mountain West Conferences (FBS Group Of Five)

Mountain West Conference (FBS Group Of Five)

Overview: Say goodbye to the Mountain West Conference as many fans know it after the 2025 season.

That's because six of its current programs- Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State, and Utah State- have chosen to join Oregon State and Washington State in the new-look Pac-12 Conference in time for the 2026 season. That move came after most of its members left for the Big 12 and Big Ten Conferences, respectively, before the 2024 season.

As this article was being posted, Texas State was frequently mentioned as the leading candidate to join the Pac-12 as the eighth football-playing member. Current NCAA rules require that conferences have at least eight schools playing football to be considered a full-time conference at the FBS level.

On the Mountain West Conference side of the conference realignment equation, Northern Illinois will join the league as a football-only member, moving from the Mid-American Conference, while UTEP and Hawai'i will leave Conference USA and the Big West Conference, respectively, to join the MWC full-time. All of these moves will happen before the 2026 season.

In the meantime, expect a wide-open race in the Mountain West Conference this fall, with multiple challengers, including UNLV, to challenge Boise State for the championship. At the same time, Oregon State and Washington State hope to contend for bowl eligibility.
