Colonial Athletic Association (CAA)-(FCS)
Overview: The traditional fall season of 2021 was another one to remember for fans of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), as two of its teams, the James Madison University Dukes and the Villanova University Wildcats advanced to the FCS playoffs. The Dukes advanced to the national semifinals before falling to eventual national champion North Dakota State 20-14 on December 18. JMU, whose lone loss in CAA play came to Villanova on October 9, finished their final CAA season at 12-2 overall, and 7-1 in CAA action.
As for Villanova, their only loss in CAA action came to William & Mary, as the Tribe pulled off the 31-18 upset win over the Wildcats on October 30. After holding Holy Cross in a close 21-16 contest in the second round of the FCS playoffs on December 3, Villanova saw its season come to a close in the quarterfinals, as South Dakota State pulled out a 35-21 win on December 11. The Wildcats' season ended at 10-3 overall and 7-1 in CAA play after losing to the Jackrabbits.
The upcoming 2022 season will see a significant change in the CAA's membership, as James Madison moves on to the FBS and Sun Belt Conference, while Hampton and Monmouth (N.J.) both join the CAA from the Big South Conference. Another Big South squad, North Carolina A&T, will wait until 2023 to join the CAA mix.
As for this fall, expect Villanova to be favored to win the CAA crown outright in James Madison's absence, although established programs in Elon, Maine, and Rhode Island, as well as one of the newcomers in Monmouth, might have something to say about that.
