RFC Throwback Thursday: Appalachian State at Marshall-1988

(Video courtesy of the Southern Conference)

This week's installment of "RFC Throwback Thursday" turns the clock back to October 29, 1988. That was when the Appalachian State University Mountaineers paid a visit to Huntington, W. Va. to take on the Marshall University Thundering Herd when both teams belonged to the NCAA Division I-AA (now FCS) Southern Conference. In this brief highlight video, this close contest came down to the closing seconds, with Marshall pulling out the incredible victory over Appalachian State. The Thundering Herd finished the 1988 season at 11-2 overall, losing to then-fellow Southern Conference member and eventual national runner-up Furman in the quarterfinals, while the Mountaineers ended their campaign at 6-4-1 overall.

RFC Throwback Thursday: Tulane's Undefeated Season-1998

(Video courtesy of Tulane University Athletics)

Welcome to the second installment of "RFC Throwback Thursday" for the 2020 season, focusing primarily on college football's past involving teams that are currently in the non-Power 5 or non-major conferences (FBS Group Of Five, FCS, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, and the NAIA).

This week's episode turns the clock back to 1998. That was when the Tulane University Green Wave finished undefeated at 12-0, finishing the season with a 41-27 win over BYU in the Liberty Bowl on December 31. Tulane joined inaugural BCS national champion Tennessee as the only unbeaten teams in NCAA Division I-A (now FBS) at the end of the 1998 season.

Now, sit back and enjoy another rare moment in non-major college football history, from 22 years ago.

RFC Throwback Thursday 2020 Debut: BYU vs. Navy from 1989

(Video courtesy of Brigham Young Athletics)

"Throwback Thursday" is back at Real Football Central for its fourth season, with a weekly look back at the history of college football outside of the current Power 5 conferences within the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) umbrella, as well as the small college divisions: NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, and the NAIA. We start off what's likely to be a challenging 2020 campaign due to COVID-19 by turning the clock back to 1989. That's when BYU did battle with Navy at Annapolis, Md. The Cougars broke open a close contest in the second half to cruise to a 31-10 win over the Midshipmen on September 16. BYU finished the 1989 season at 10-3 overall after losing to Penn State in the Holiday Bowl.

RFC Weekly Predictions: THE 2020 DEBUT

Editor's Note: This is the first installment of the "RFC Weekly Predictions", on Real Football Central. Each week during the 2020 season, we'll take a brief look at the top games in FBS (Group Of Five), FCS, and small college football (NCAA Division II, Division III, and NAIA), with predictions!

If you're wondering what the "Group Of Five" is, it consists of the American Athletic Conference and Conference USA, as well as the Mid-American, Mountain West, and Sun Belt Conferences. As always, there no games involving any teams from the Power 5 Conferences.

With the continuing COVID-19 pandemic leading to most of the programs featured on RFC either canceling their seasons or postponing them until Spring 2021, there will be a limited number of games featured this fall. Also, the normal format for this column will be revised due to the coronavirus, with the schedule (s) subject to change during the Fall 2020 season.
So, without further ado, let's get started!
