This week's edition of Throwback Thursday takes us back to October 29, 1988. That was when the Washington State University Cougars traveled to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, to face the #1-ranked UCLA Bruins in a Pacific-10 Conference contest.
In an outcome that helped to shake up the national championship picture at the NCAA Division I-A (now FBS) level, the Cougars upset the Bruins, 34-30. The win over UCLA sparked a season-ending five-game winning streak for Washington State, which culminated in a 24-22 victory over Houston in the Aloha Bowl on Christmas Day (December 25).
The Cougars finished the 1988 season with a 9-3 overall record and a 5-3 mark in Pac-10 play, which was good enough for a third-place finish in the conference and a final national ranking of #16.
