Overview: The 2019 season turned out to be a changing of the guard in the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC), as the Austin Peay State University Governors made history in not only winning their first league crown since 1977 but also advancing to the FCS playoffs for the first time ever.

In the FCS playoffs, the Governors downed Furman in the first round for their first-ever FCS playoff victory, followed by a stunning upset win over #3 seed Sacramento State in the second round, before finally falling to Montana State in the quarterfinals to finish the season at 11-4 overall.

The only other OVC squad to advance to postseason play in 2019 was the Southeast Missouri State University Redhawks. Unlike the Governors, however, the Redhawks saw their season grind to a halt in the first round, as the Illinois State University Redbirds ousted them 24-7. The loss ended Southeast Missouri State's season at 9-4 overall.

The 2020 season could prove to be a campaign of uncertainty, COVID-19 notwithstanding, as Austin Peay will not only look to defend its OVC crown but also hope to make another deep postseason run if and/or when they do get there. UT-Martin (7-5 overall, 6-2 in the OVC in 2019) and Eastern Kentucky (7-5, 5-3) could very well have a say in the league title discussion this fall. Don't count out perennial power Jacksonville State either, as the Gamecocks hope to rebound after a disappointing 2019 campaign in which they finished 6-6 overall and 3-5 in OVC action.
