What it is: Competing in the Football Championship Subdivision of NCAA Division I (formerly Division I-AA), the roots of the Northeast Conference go all the way back to 1981, when it didn't sponsor football. The NEC currently has nine schools taking to the gridiron, out of 12 current members overall. Central Connecticut State (9-3, 7-1) enters the 2010 season as the defending champion. The league has sponsored football since 1996, and will earn an automatic bid to the FCS playoffs starting in 2010.
