Overview: The NSIC proved once again why it's one of the toughest conferences in all of NCAA Division II, as eight of its 16 teams finished the 2016 season with a winning record. Two of those teams, Sioux Falls (12-1 overall in 2016), and Minnesota-Duluth (10-2 in 2016) advanced to the playoffs last season. The Cougars advanced to the second round before falling to Harding in an overtime heartbreaker. As for UMD, the Bulldogs season ended in the first round of the D-II playoffs after being crushed by Emporia State. A third team, Bemidji State (9-3 in 2016) won the Mineral Water Bowl with a 36-23 win over Washburn. It was the Beavers first-ever postseason victory. With that said, expect more drama in the NSIC for 2017.
