Overview: After just 19 seasons of playing football, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (UMHB) Crusaders (15-0 overall in 2016) of Belton, Texas finally won the ultimate prize last season, as they outlasted Wisconsin-Oshkosh 10-7 to win their first-ever national championship. The "Cru" will go into this season as the team to beat in all of NCAA Division III, as UMHB was ranked No. 1 by d3football.com.

The only other American Southwest Conference (ASC) team to advance to postseason play in 2016 was Hardin-Simmons (9-2 overall). The Cowboys season ended with a loss to Linfield in the first round. Ironically, though, it would be UMHB who brought the Wildcats season to an end with a win in the second round en route to winning it all last fall.

The 2017 season will bring numerous changes to the ASC landscape, with Texas Lutheran and Southwestern (Tex.) coming over from the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC). Additionally, Belhaven and McMurry will be ineligible for postseason play, although the Warhawks are eligible for the ASC regular season title.
