Overview: The Harding University Bisons (13-1 overall in 2016) had the best season of in their program's history last fall, advancing to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II playoffs before losing to eventual national champion Northwest Missouri State. Another Great American Conference (GAC) team, the Southern Arkansas University Muleriders (9-3 overall in 2016), advanced to the Agent Barry Live United Bowl, losing to Texas A&M-Kingsville, 24-17.
Going into 2017, Harding has a new coach in Paul Simmons, who replaced the now-retired Ronnie Huckeba, while Southern Arkansas enters the season ranked No. 22 in the preseason AFCA poll.
