Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC)-(NAIA)


Overview: Once again, the race for the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) championship came down to multiple teams, with three of them in Texas Wesleyan, Ottawa (Ariz.), and Arizona Christian all finishing in a three-way tie for first place in league play at 7-2.

However, when the NAIA playoffs rolled around, only Arizona Christian advanced to postseason play, with the Firestorm falling to then-defending national champion Morningside, 35-18, to end their season at 8-3 overall. As for OUAZ and Texas Wesleyan, both of the squads sat at home for the holidays despite finishing at 7-2 and 9-2 overall, respectively.

Moving ahead to 2023, multiple changes are in store for the SAC, with longtime members Lyon and Arizona Christian leaving the league. As this article was being posted, the Scots from Batesville, Arkansas began their transition to the NCAA Division III level, while the Firestorm moved on to the Frontier Conference.

While the two aforementioned programs have moved on to (hopefully) greener pastures, one new program has joined the SAC in time for the 2023 season, with the Arkansas Baptist College Buffaloes from Little Rock, Arkansas beginning their first full season of football this fall.
