Overview: To say that the 2022 football season for the Lone Star Conference (LSC) was bizarre was an understatement, to say the least.
The first case in point involves last year's champion in the Angelo State University Rams from San Angelo, Texas. After clinching the LSC championship at 9-0 in league play, as well as undefeated at 11-0 overall, the Rams rolled past Bemidji State in the second round as a #1 seed in Super Region #4, only to be ousted by the eventual national runners-up in the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers in the quarterfinals on December 3. Angelo State finished its' season at 12-1 overall following the loss to the Orediggers.
While Angelo State cruised to another LSC crown last fall, the other league teams struggled to even finish the season with a winning record, much less contend for a conference title. The Texas A&M University-Kingsville Javelinas from Kingsville, Texas were one of those teams, as they carried a 7-0 record into their October 22 game vs. the Rams. Like TAMUK, ASU also entered that showdown unbeaten at 7-0.
After falling to Angelo State 34-7, it was downhill from there for TAMUK, with the Javelinas losing five straight games to end their 2022 season. TAMUK fell to East Central, 38-21, on December 3 to close out its' campaign at 7-5 overall, and 5-4 in LSC play.
One team that surprised everyone in LSC play last season was the Central Washington University Wildcats from Ellensburg, Washington. CWU, who joined fellow Great Northwest Athletic Conference member Western Oregon in the LSC, overcame a slow start to finish their inaugural campaign at 6-4 overall, and 6-3 in conference play. Ironically, one of the Wildcats wins down the stretch came on October 29, when they knocked off then #20 TAMUK 23-19 to help push them above the .500 mark.
Looking ahead to 2023 and beyond, Angelo State was once again tabbed as the preseason favorite to win the LSC title, as the Rams received 25 of 27 first-place votes, as well as 241 points overall. In addition to ASU, expect CWU and TAMUK to have a say in the LSC conversation, as well as Midwestern State (6-5, 5-4), Western New Mexico (6-5, 5-4), Western Oregon (6-5, 5-4),and West Texas A&M (5-6, 3-6), among other squads.
