Great American Conference (GAC)-(NCAA Division II)
Overview: It was another outstanding season for the Ouachita Baptist University Tigers, as they finished the regular season undefeated at 11-0 overall, while winning another Great American Conference (GAC) championship in 2022.
However, OBU would see its' NCAA Division II playoff run end way too soon, with the Tigers stumbling in a 47-17 first round upset loss to Northwest Missouri State on November 19. Ouachita Baptist finished the 2022 season at 11-1 overall following the loss to the Bearcats.
Elsewhere in the GAC, although three teams combined for 25 regular season wins overall last fall, only one of them advanced to postseason play, as both Harding and Henderson State missed out on opportunities to extend their seasons despite finishing at 9-2 and 8-3 overall, respectively.
But the East Central University Tigers from Ada, Oklahoma made the most of their only postseason opportunity, as they knocked off Texas A&M-Kingsville, 38-21, to win the Fun Town RV Heritage Bowl in Corsicana, Texas, on December 3. East Central finished its' season at 9-3 overall, ending it with three straight wins following an 0-2 start.
Another GAC squad also earned a spot in a bowl game despite a late-season slump, with the Southeastern Oklahoma State University Savage Storm from Durant, Oklahoma advancing to the Farmers Bank and Trust Live United Bowl, which was also played on December 3. Southeastern fell to Emporia State, 48-27, as the Savage Storm ended its' season with three straight losses to finish at 6-6 overall.
Going into the 2023 season, the GAC's coaches chose Ouachita Baptist as the favorite to win another conference title this fall, according to their preseason poll. But the Tigers from Arkadelphia, Arkansas had to fight off another Arkansas squad in the form of Harding University from Searcy. OBU received 116 total points and eight first-place votes, respectively, while the Bisons finished second with 113 points and four first-place votes.
