THE RFC MYC: Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC)-(NAIA)

Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC)-(NAIA)

Overview: It was another solid season on the football field, from top to bottom, in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) for 2022. Just like in 2021, three teams won a share of the KCAC championship, with Kansas Wesleyan (8-3 overall, 7-3 in the KCAC in 2022) advancing to the NAIA playoffs en route to a final overall record of 11-2 overall at the end of that traditional fall season.

But as for 2022, it was Avila University that got the nod for postseason play, as the Eagles advanced to the NAIA playoffs for the first time ever after finishing KCAC action tied with Bethel (Kan.) and Southwestern (Kan.) at 9-1 in conference play. That was primarily thanks to wins over KWU and Bethel on October 8th and 15th, respectively. However, Avila's season was stopped cold in the first round, as Indiana Wesleyan eliminated the Eagles in a 14-7 defensive struggle. Avila finished at 10-1 overall after losing to IWU.

As for other two teams that shared the KCAC crown with Avila last fall, Bethel was shut out of postseason play altogether despite the Threshers finishing their 2022 season at 9-1 overall, while Southwestern's season came to a close at 9-2 overall after the Moundbuilders bowed to Benedictine (Kan.) 35-7 in the first round on November 19.

Looking ahead to the 2023 season, the KCAC welcomes Evangel University (7-3 overall in 2022) into their fold for this fall. As a result, the KCAC will not only have 12 schools playing football this season but also split into two six-team divisions, both of whom will be named after two former head coaches. One division will be named the "Dr. Ted Kessinger Division", while the other will be named the "Franklin 'Gene' Bissell Division."
