Mid-States Football Association (MSFA)-(NAIA)
Overview: There were competitive races within both divisions of the Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) in the fall of 2021, with five of the eight teams in the Mideast League posting winning records last season, as opposed to three of the eight teams in the Midwest League having a winning season a year ago.
Of the eight MSFA squads that had winning records last fall, only three of them advanced to postseason play, with Concordia (Mich.)-(9-2 overall in 2021) and Marian (9-3) advancing to the NAIA playoffs from the Mideast League, while St. Xavier (8-3) moved on to the postseason from the Midwest League. Concordia crushed SXU 47-3 in the first round, only to fall to eventual national runner-up Grand View 31-16 in the quarterfinals, while Marian had to rally to eliminate Southwestern (Kan.) 21-17 in the first round before losing a heartbreaker to Northwestern (Iowa) 25-20 in the quarterfinals to end the Knights season in devastating fashion.
As the 2022 campaign approaches, the MSFA is once again expected to be one of the toughest conferences in the NAIA, with five of the conference's squads; Marian at #5, Indiana Wesleyan (7-3 overall in 2021) at No. 9, St. Francis (Ind.)-(3-6) at #12, St. Xavier at #14, and St. Francis (Ill.)-(6-3), starting the season ranked in the College Football America Yearbook preseason poll. To make that long story short, expect another competitive season in a conference where every team lost at least one league game last fall.
