Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC)-(NCAA Division III)
Overview: As this article was posted, five of the six schools playing football in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) got their 2023 seasons underway on Saturday, September 2. California Lutheran, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, and Redlands all won their games, while La Verne lost its' season opener, and Chapman's game at Pacific was canceled due to constant weather delays.
The one team that has yet to start its' 2023 season as this post was being typed was Pomona-Pitzer, with the Sagehens traveling to Minnesota to face Carleton on Saturday, September 9. They hope to build on a 2022 season where they finished at 8-3 overall, resulting in their program's first-ever NCAA Division III playoff appearance. However, their postseason run was stopped in the first round, with Linfield ending Pomona-Pitzer's with a 51-24 loss.
One team that could challenge Pomona-Pitzer for the SCIAC crown this season is Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Although the Stags finished the 2022 season sharing the SCIAC championship with the Sagehens at 5-1 in conference play, it was Pomona-Pitzer that advanced to postseason play with a 28-14 win over C-M-S on December 12. The Stags had to settle for a final overall record of 7-2.
In addition to these two aforementioned teams, expect Chapman (7-3, 4-2) and Redlands (4-6, 4-2) to put themselves in contention for the conference championship. However, one school won't take part in playing football this fall, as Whittier College from Whittier, California chose to close its' football program at the end of the 2022 season due to declining participation among student athletes. That leaves the SCIAC with just six schools playing football going into 2023.
