This week's installment of "RFC Throwback Thursday" turns the clock back first to September 11, 2004, and then to September 8, 2007, respectively. That was when the Southern Illinois University Salukis squared off against the Northern Illinois University Huskies on the road in both meetings.
In the 2004 game, NIU held off a late rally from a then #1-ranked NCAA Division I-AA (now FCS) squad in SIU to win 23-22, only to have the Salukis avenge that loss three years later, as they rallied from a 31-14 deficit to defeat the Huskies 34-31.
NIU finished the 2004 and 2007 seasons at 9-3 and 2-10, respectively, while SIU ended its respective seasons at 10-2 and 12-2. The Salukis 2004 season ended with an upset loss to Eastern Washington in the first round, while the 2007 campaign came to a close in the national semifinals after losing to eventual national runner-up Delaware in the semifinals.
As for the Huskies, their 2004 season with a 34-21 win over Troy in the now-defunct Silicon Valley Football Classic on December 30, only to fall to a disappointing 2-10 mark in 2007.
