Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC)-(FCS)
Overview: For the ninth time in the last 11 seasons, the North Dakota State University Bison emerged as the national champions of the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), as NDSU crushed Montana State, 38-10, to solidify its place in college football history on Saturday, January 8, 2022. With the convincing win over the Bobcats, the Bison finished the traditional 2021 fall season at 14-1 overall, losing only to South Dakota State (11-4 overall, 5-3 in the MVFC), 27-19, on the road on November 6.
While NDSU added yet another national championship to its trophy case, other teams in the Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) enjoyed deep runs in postseason play, with South Dakota State advancing the farthest. After pulling out road wins over Sacramento State and Villanova, the Jackrabbits lost to eventual national runner-up Montana State in the semifinals, 31-17, on December 18.
Other MVFC teams that found their way to postseason play last fall were Missouri State (8-4, 6-2), Southern Illinois (8-5, 5-3), South Dakota (7-5, 5-3), and Northern Iowa (6-6, 4-4). While the Bears lost a heartbreaker at Tennessee-Martin, 32-31, in the first round of the FCS playoffs, the Salukis knocked the Coyotes on the road before succumbing to NDSU in the second round, and the Panthers' season ended in round one after losing to Eastern Washington.
With another season soon to come around the corner, expect North Dakota State to once again be favored to win its 10th national title in 12 years, with the rest of the MVFC finding itself seriously pursuing the Bison within their own conference.
