Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA)-(NCAA Division II)
Overview: The Northwest Missouri State University Bearcats and the University of Central Missouri Mules shared the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) title in 2019, with both teams finishing 10-1 in both conference and overall play, respectively while advancing to the NCAA Division II playoffs.
During the regular season, the University of Nebraska-Kearney Lopers handed the Bearcats their lone loss in a 24-17 upset win over then-No. 7 ranked squad on October 19, 2019. On the other hand, Northwest Missouri State handed Central Missouri its only regular-season loss, as the Bearcats crushed the Mules 45-23 on November 16 to clinch a share of the program's 30th MIAA championship.
Both Central and Northwest Missouri had one common opponent during the D-II playoffs in the form of the Ferris State University Bulldogs from Big Rapids, Michigan. The Mules outlasted Indianapolis 37-27 in the first round before being eliminated by the Bulldogs 37-10 in the second round to finish their season at 11-2 overall. As for the Bearcats, they edged Harding 7-6 in the first round, crushed Lindenwood 63-7 in the second round, only to fall to the same aforementioned Ferris State squad in the quarterfinals to close its 2019 campaign at 12-2 overall.
Two other MIAA teams to advance to postseason play in 2019 were Missouri Western State (9-3 overall), and Nebraska-Kearney (7-5 overall). The Griffons defeated Henderson State 35-14 in the Agent Barry Live United Bowl in Texarkana, Arkansas on December 7, while the Lopers powered past Winona State 50-33 to claim the Mineral Water Bowl crown. Another team, Fort Hays State (8-3 overall) fell short of the postseason despite winning eight of their final nine games following on 0-2 start.
With the 2020 season canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the focus has turned to the 2021 season for the MIAA. As the favorite to finish first in both the coaches and media polls, respectively, expect Northwest Missouri State to be the team to beat once again.
