Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC)-(NAIA)
Overview: The Morningside University Mustangs won their second straight NAIA football national championship in 2019, outlasting the Marian University Knights 40-38 on December 21. However, their quest for a third straight title was derailed on May 1, 2021, as fellow Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) rival Northwestern (Iowa) pulled off the upset in the final seconds, by the final score of 44-41.
Going into the traditional fall season of 2021, with Northwestern (11-2 overall in 2020-21) and ranked Morningside (10-1 overall in 2020-21) both ranked No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, in the Preseason NAIA Coaches Poll, expect both the Red Raiders and Mustangs to be in the conversation for the GPAC and NAIA crowns this fall.
