New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC)-(NCAA Division III)
Overview: The 2019 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) season was dominated by two teams that were not from New Jersey, in the form of the Salisbury University Sea Gulls from Salisbury, Maryland, as well as the Wesley College Wolverines from nearby Dover, Delaware. Both teams not only advanced to the NCAA Division III playoffs, but they also won one playoff game each, only to lose in the second round.
Salisbury cruised through the regular season undefeated, finishing at 7-0 in the NJAC play en route to taking the NJAC title in finishing at 10-0 overall. The Sea Gulls downed Union in a high-scoring second-round contest, before falling to eventual national semifinalist Muhlenberg in the quarterfinals to their season at 11-1 overall.
Wesley also represented the NJAC well during postseason play, as the Wolverines finished 6-1 in league action, and 9-1 overall, with their lone loss coming to Salisbury in a thrilling 45-38 contest on October 12. In the D-III playoffs, Wesley crushed Framingham State in the first round, before losing to Delaware Valley in the second round to finish their 2019 campaign at 10-2 overall.
The COVID-19 pandemic forced the NJAC to play a limited schedule of games during the spring of 2021. Salisbury was the lone league squad to finish the abbreviated season undefeated, as the Sea Gulls won the South Division title with a 2-0 overall record, while the Montclair State University Red Hawks clinched the North Division championship with an overall mark of 2-1, as well as 2-0 in division play.
The fall 2021 season will have one less program in the mix, as Wesley College from Dover, Delaware merged with NCAA Division I Delaware State University at the end of the 2020-2021 academic year. However, the final edition of the Wolverines did manage to go out on a winning note, as they defeated Christopher Newport 23-7 on April 2, 2021, to finish at 2-1 overall. The loss of Wesley leaves the NJAC with seven squads taking the field this fall.
