Overview: In only their fourth season of action, the University of West Florida Argonauts made history in 2019, as they pulled off five straight upset wins on the road to win their first-ever national championship. Along the way, the Argos ended then-defending national champion Valdosta State's 25-game winning streak with a 38-35 win in the second round, followed by wins over Lenoir-Rhyne, Ferris State, and Minnesota State-Mankato to finish the season at 13-2 overall. UWF's only losses for the 2019 campaign came to Carson-Newman and Valdosta State (10-1 overall in 2019).

Even with the stunning season-ending loss to UWF, VSU still managed to win back-to-back Gulf South Conference (GSC) championships for 2019, with the Blazers getting by the Argos 26-21 on November 9, followed by a 42-14 rout of fellow GSC archrival West Georgia the following week to win those back-to-back conference crowns.

Following an abbreviated spring 2021 season that saw just three teams in Mississippi College (0-1), Shorter (2-2), and West Alabama (2-0), take the field, the Gulf South Conference (GSC) returns to action this fall with eight teams playing this season. Sadly, however, Florida Tech (5-6 overall in 2019) chose to disband its football program in 2020 due to COVID-19 concerns.

As for those teams that will make their long-awaited return to action, West Florida and Valdosta State are the obvious favorites to face off against each other for the GSC crown. But don't be surprised if Delta State, Mississippi College, and West Georgia, et. al., make a serious run for this year's title.
