New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC)-(NCAA Division III)
Overview: The 2018 and 2019 seasons were both the "Years of the Engineers", as in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Engineers. MIT won back-to-back New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) titles the last two seasons after 6-1 in league play in both years. However, the Engineers fell to Johns Hopkins, 49-0, in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs, to finish their 2018 season at 9-2 overall, followed by another first-round loss to eventual national semifinalist Muhlenberg the following year to finish the 2019 season at 7-3 overall.
Another team of Engineers, the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) Engineers, bounced back from a so-so 2018 season (6-4 overall, 4-3 in the NEWMAC) to finish the 2019 season at 10-1 overall, with their lone loss coming to their fellow Engineer counterparts from MIT. But WPI did bounce back in a big way, crushing Western Connecticut State, 35-6, in a New England Bowl Series contest on November 23, 2019.
With the 2020 season canceled due to COVID-19, the focus now turns to the 2021 season for the NEWMAC, with both WPI and MIT being among the challengers for the conference championship this fall. But one team won't return this fall, as Maine Maritime Academy shut down its football program on August 14, 2020, due to the continuing concerns caused by the pandemic. Maine Maritime's departure leaves the NEWMAC with seven schools for this fall.
