Overview: There was a lot of transition, as well as triumph, for the Southland Conference during the fall 2020/spring 2021 season. While the SLC finally got its national champion in the form of Sam Houston State, they and four other schools decided to leave the league for greener pastures in the temporary "AQ7" conference, of whom its members will eventually join other leagues in the Atlantic Sun and Western Athletic Conferences, respectively in time for the 2022 season.

In addition to Sam Houston State, four other Texas schools in Abilene Christian, Lamar, Stephen F. Austin, and Tarleton State-who's making the transition from the NCAA Division II level-will join the newly-rechristened WAC, while Central Arkansas has plans to join the A-Sun. Of the four teams that chose to participate in the fall season exclusively, Stephen F. Austin had the best overall record at 6-4, followed by UCA at 5-4, Houston Baptist at 1-3, and Abilene Christian at 1-5. Of that group, only Houston Baptist will stay in the Southland Conference this season, as will five other squads in Incarnate Word, McNeese State, Nicholls, Northwestern State, and Southeastern Louisiana.

Going into the fall 2021 season, expect all six SLC squads to have a say in the championship conversation, with each team playing up to eight conference games. Of the six schools that will take the field this fall, only Nicholls and Southeastern Louisiana had winning records last season, with both squads finishing at 4-3 overall.
