Overview: The spring 2021 season was a mixed bag for the Pioneer Football League (PFL), as the race for the conference championship came down to the final week of the regular season. In the end, it was the Davidson College Wildcats emerging from the pack as the automatic qualifier to the FCS playoffs from the PFL. They fell in the first round to Jacksonville State, 49-14, to finish their season at 4-3 overall and 4-1 in conference play. None of the eight PFL teams that took the field this past spring won more than four games overall, with league newcomer Presbyterian (4-3) being declared ineligible for the conference championship.
In off-the-field news, the University of Dayton Flyers chose to sit out the shortened spring season due to COVID-19 concerns, while the University of St. Thomas Tommies from St. Paul, Minn. will join the PFL from the NCAA Division III ranks. UST joins the PFL after spending more than a century in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC).
As for this upcoming season, expect another close race for the PFL crown, with the University of San Diego Toreros looking to bounce back after seeing their run of four straight postseason appearances come to a close this past spring.
