In anticipation of tonight's (Thursday's) match-up between the Marshall University Thundering Herd and the Appalachian State University Mountaineers, this week's installment of "RFC Throwback Thursday" turns the clock back to Saturday, October 21, 1995. That was when the Herd played host to the Mountaineers when both teams were powerhouse squads in what is now the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS-formerly NCAA Division I-AA). Although App State would outlast Marshall in a low-scoring contest at Huntington, W. Va. on that mid-autumn night, it would be the Herd that advanced to the national championship game on December 16, where they lost a heartbreaker to Montana 22-20. Marshall moved up to what is now the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS-formerly NCAA Division I-A) in 1997, while Appalachian State didn't move up to the FBS until 2014.
