Just when things couldn't get any worse for the troubled Cheyney University football program, they just did. The NCAA Division II program in suburban Philadelphia was hit a three-year probation by the NCAA for major violations.

On June 19, 1987, the Pittsburgh Gladiators played host to the Washington Commandos before more than 12,000 interested spectators at the Pittsburgh Civic Arena. That contest marked the beginning of the phenomenon known as "Arena Football".
