This week's "RFC Throwback Thursday" installment takes us to 1986. That was when the then-NCAA Division III University of Dayton Flyers hosted the then-NCAA Division II Butler University Bulldogs in a rare non-conference contest between two teams from separate divisions.
In a close contest on September 6, the Flyers edged the Bulldogs 17-16 to open their season on a winning note. Dayton ended the 1986 season at 10-1 overall, losing to Mount Union 42-36 in the first round of the D-III playoffs, while Butler finished at 5-5 overall.
This week's contest between Butler and Dayton in Indianapolis will mark the 49th all-time meeting between the two current Pioneer Football League (PFL) members. The Flyers lead 33-14-1, but the Bulldogs have won the last two games played between the two teams, in 2022 and 2023.
