Southern Athletic Association (SAA)--NCAA Division III
Looking back: Despite going 9-1 during the regular season, the Millsaps College Majors found themselves on the outside looking in when the NCAA Division III playoffs arrived.
Their lone loss of 2013 proved to be a very costly one, as the Rhodes College Lynx pulled out the 49-30 upset win on the final day of the regular season: November 16. While the win gave the Lynx a share of the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) title, the loss not only cost the Majors an undefeated regular season, it also cost them a possible trip to postseason play.
Looking ahead: Don't be surprised if both Millsaps and Rhodes challenge each other for the 2014 SAA crown. This year's clash is set for November 15 at Millsaps.
Predicted order of finish (2013 overall record in parentheses):
1. Millsaps (9-1): The Majors will quickly find out how good they are in their 2014 season opener on September 6. That's when they'll play host to perennial NCAA Division III playoff participant Mary Hardin-Baylor.
2. Rhodes (8-2): The Lynx will get a stiff early season non-conference test too, as they'll take on Washington (Mo.) at home on September 13.
3. Centre (7-3): The Colonels hope to give both aforementioned a run for their money after finishing 4-2 in SAA action last season.
4. Birmingham-Southern (5-4): The Panthers look to move forward after an up-and-down 2013 campaign that saw them finish 3-3 in conference play.
5. Sewanee (4-6): The Tigers will face a rough patch in October, playing three of their four games on the road during that month. They'll travel to Birmingham-Southern, Rhodes, and Millsaps, with their only home game coming against Centre on October 18.
6. Hendrix (3-7): After splitting their first six contests, the wheels came off completely for the Warriors down the stretch, ending 2013 on a four-game losing streak. They hope for a better ending to 2014.
7. Berry (0-9): After a winless inaugural season, the Vikings hope to earn that historic first-ever win this season.
