Welcome to another season of "RFC Throwback Thursday", only on the Real Football Central blog. Each week during the college football season, "RFC Throwback Thursday" takes a look back at some of the greatest games and moments in "alternative college football" history, or the history of college football outside of the so-called "power conferences" such as the SEC or Big 10 for example.
This week, the clock gets turned back to September 17, 2016. That was when the Coastal Carolina University Chanticleers traveled from Conway, South Carolina to Jacksonville, Alabama to face the Jacksonville State University Gamecocks when both programs played at the FCS level. It was the first-ever meeting between both programs at the time.
Thanks to a go-ahead touchdown with 6:44 to play in the game, the Gamecocks rallied to beat the Chanticleers 27-26. Jacksonville State finished the 2016 season at 10-2 overall after an upset loss to eventual national runner-up Youngstown State in the second round of the FCS playoffs. Coastal Carolina also finished its' campaign with that same record after beating Hampton 26-7 on November 26. CCU began transitioning to the FBS level the following season, while JSU remained at the FCS level until 2023.
The first video pictured above is the press conference featuring then-Coastal Carolina head coach Joe Moglia ahead of the game. In contrast, the second video features then-Jacksonville State head coach John Grass in a postgame press conference following the Gamecocks win over the Chanticleers.
